R410A Refrigerant Gas – Efficient Cooling for Modern Air Conditioners
Nairobi offices, hotels and homes depend on air conditioning that cools quickly and runs efficiently. Most modern split units, VRF systems and heat pumps use R410A refrigerant gas to do exactly that. At Wisdo Merchants, we supply R410A to HVAC technicians, contractors and facility managers across Nairobi and Kenya.
R410A is an HFC blend (a mixture of hydrofluorocarbon gases) made of equal parts R32 and R125. It replaced R22 in new air conditioners because it does not damage the ozone layer. In addition, it transfers heat more efficiently, which allows manufacturers to build compact, high-performance units.
Features and Benefits of R410A Refrigerant Gas
R410A delivers strong cooling in a smaller package. Here is why manufacturers and technicians use it:
- High cooling capacity. It absorbs more heat per kilogram than R22, so systems cool rooms faster.
- Zero ozone depletion. The blend contains no chlorine and has an Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) of zero.
- A1 safety rating. ASHRAE classifies it as A1, meaning low toxicity and no flame spread under normal conditions.
- Near-azeotropic behaviour. Its two components act almost like a single gas. As a result, the temperature glide (the change in boiling temperature during evaporation) is negligible.
- Compact system design. Moreover, its efficiency allows smaller coils and pipes, which saves space in modern buildings.
For your clients, this means comfortable rooms and lower running costs. Likewise, contractors get a gas that suits the latest inverter and VRF equipment.

Applications and How to Use R410A refrigerant gas
R410A works in equipment designed specifically for it, including:
- Wall-mounted split air conditioners for homes and offices
- Ducted and cassette units in commercial buildings
- VRF/VRV systems (variable refrigerant flow) serving multiple rooms
- Air-source heat pumps for heating and hot water
- Rooftop packaged units and small chillers
Servicing a Split AC
Imagine an office split unit that blows warm air on a hot afternoon. First, the technician connects R410A-rated gauges and checks the pressures. Next, they locate and repair the leak. After that, they pull a deep vacuum to remove moisture, since POE oil absorbs water readily. Finally, they charge R410A as liquid by weight, following the outdoor unit’s nameplate.
R410A runs at roughly 50–70% higher pressure than R22. Therefore, always use hoses, gauges and recovery equipment rated for R410A.
Important: Not a Drop-In for R22
Never put R410A into an R22 system. The higher pressures can burst components, and the oils are not compatible. Instead, R22 units need replacement with R410A-rated equipment.
Planning Ahead
R410A has a moderately high Global Warming Potential. Consequently, many countries are phasing it down under the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol. Existing units can continue running on it, while many new air conditioners now use R32 or R454B.
Safety and Handling
R410A is safe when handled properly. Nevertheless, it is a high-pressure gas, so follow these precautions:
- Protect your eyes and hands. Wear safety goggles and insulated gloves. Liquid refrigerant causes frostbite on contact.
- Ventilate enclosed spaces. The vapour is heavier than air and can displace oxygen in small rooms and ceiling voids.
- Keep away from flames and hot surfaces. High heat breaks the gas down into toxic and corrosive products.
- Store cylinders safely. Keep them upright in a cool, shaded area below 50 °C, away from direct sunlight.
- Use rated equipment only. Standard R22 tools are not built for R410A pressures.
- Recover, don’t vent. Use proper recovery equipment for used gas.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I top up R410A after a leak?
Yes. Because has almost no temperature glide, topping up after a leak repair generally keeps the blend stable. However, always fix the leak first and charge as liquid.
Can I use R410A in my old R22 air conditioner?
No. R410A works at much higher pressures and needs POE oil. You must replace the R22 unit with equipment designed for R410A.
What is the difference between R410A and R32?
R32 is one of the two components in R410A. Used alone, it has a lower GWP and a mild flammability rating (A2L). The two gases are not interchangeable, so always follow the unit’s nameplate.
Which oil works with R410A?
Use POE (polyolester) oil. Mineral oil does not mix properly with R410A.
