Description

Loctite UK 5400 Polyurethane Hardener in Nairobi

Loctite UK 5400 is the isocyanate hardener (Part B) in Henkel’s two-part, solvent-free polyurethane adhesive system. You mix it with a matching Loctite UK resin (Part A). Together, they cure into a hard, elastic bond that holds metals, wood, plastics and rigid foam panels firmly in place. Wisdo Merchants supplies it to panel makers, body builders and maintenance teams across Kenya.

Why Choose Loctite UK 5400 for Structural Bonding?

Many workshops struggle with weak, foamy or uneven bonds when building insulated panels. In most cases, the cause is the wrong hardener, poor mixing or moisture. This hardener solves that because it is made specifically for the Loctite UK resin range. As a result, you get a predictable cure and a consistent bondline (the thin layer of adhesive between two surfaces).

Loctite UK 5400 Features and Benefits

  • Solvent-free formula: It gives off no solvent vapour while curing, and the cured adhesive shows no measurable shrinkage.
  • Low viscosity: At about 250–350 mPa·s (viscosity means how thick a liquid is), it pours and mixes easily into the thicker resin.
  • Hard but elastic cure: The cured adhesive absorbs vibration instead of cracking, which suits vehicle and container panels.
  • Strong bonds: Paired with Loctite UK 8103, Henkel reports a tensile shear strength above 6 MPa (EN 1465).
  • Room-temperature cure: It cures at room temperature above 15 °C. Alternatively, you can heat it up to 60 °C for faster production.
  • Versatile substrates: It bonds pre-treated metals, wood, synthetic materials and hard foams.

Loctite UK 5400 Applications and How to Use

Henkel designed this system mainly for sandwich panels. These are lightweight panels with a foam core bonded between two rigid skins. For example, a truck body builder in Industrial Area might bond aluminium skins to a polyurethane foam core for a refrigerated box. Similarly, it suits:

  • Insulated panels for vehicles, cold-room containers, tanks and tankers
  • Construction panels and shipbuilding parts
  • Engineered insulation (Henkel lists suitability down to -190 °C)
  • Potting, filling and coating, where a hard, elastic casting resin is needed

How to use it:

  1. First, clean the surfaces so they are dry and free of dust, oil, grease and release agents. Grinding, sandblasting or a primer improves adhesion further.
  2. Next, stir the resin (Part A) until it is uniform.
  3. Then add Loctite UK 5400 at the correct ratio and mix until no streaks remain.
  4. Finally, apply the mixture within its pot life and press the parts together.

Keep in mind that larger batches and higher temperatures shorten the pot life. In contrast, cooler conditions extend it. For faster production, Henkel offers the Loctite UK 6100 accelerator, although it also shortens the pot life.

Safety and Handling

This hardener contains isocyanates, so handle it with care. Read the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) before use. Wear chemical-resistant gloves and eye protection, and work in a well-ventilated area.

Moisture is the main enemy of this product. Water makes the adhesive foam and weakens the bond, so reseal containers immediately after use. Clean up fresh material with Loctite SF 8040. Once cured, the adhesive can only be removed mechanically.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Loctite UK 5400 on its own?
No. It is only the hardener. You must mix it with a compatible Loctite UK polyurethane resin, such as Loctite UK 8103 or UK 8160.

What mix ratio should I use?
It depends on the resin. With Loctite UK 8103, for instance, the ratio is 5 : 1 by weight. Always confirm the ratio on the datasheet for your resin.

Why did my adhesive foam while curing?
Foaming usually means moisture got into the hardener or the bond area. Therefore, keep containers tightly sealed and make sure surfaces are completely dry.

How should I store it?
Store it sealed at 15–25 °C, away from humidity. Under these conditions, it lasts 12 months in unopened packaging.
