Description

Copeland ZR144KC Scroll Compressor for Commercial Air Conditioning

Large offices, banks, hotels and shopping centres depend on packaged and ducted air conditioners that run for long hours every day. When the compressor in one of these units fails, the whole floor heats up quickly. At Wisdo Merchants, we supply the Copeland ZR144KC scroll compressor to HVAC contractors, technicians and facility managers across Nairobi and Kenya.

The ZR144KC belongs to Copeland’s commercial ZR scroll family. It is designed for R22 air conditioning systems and delivers around 120,000 Btu/h of cooling on a 50 Hz supply. As a result, it is a popular replacement compressor for packaged units, ducted splits and chillers of roughly 10 tons.

Features and Benefits of the Copeland ZR144KC Scroll Compressor

  • Efficient scroll design. A scroll compressor compresses gas smoothly between two spirals, which reduces energy loss.
  • Strong cooling output. It delivers about 120,000 Btu/h at 50 Hz, enough for large commercial air conditioning units.
  • Built for Kenya’s power supply. The TFD version runs on 380–415 V, three-phase, 50 Hz.
  • Quiet, low-vibration running. Fewer moving parts and no suction or discharge valves keep noise down.
  • Compact and reliable. Its light, compact build simplifies replacement, and Copeland scrolls have a long service record worldwide.

For building owners, this means restored comfort and dependable cooling. Meanwhile, contractors get a well-known compressor that is straightforward to install.

Applications of the Copeland ZR144KC Scroll Compressor and How to Use It

  • Packaged rooftop air conditioners on commercial buildings
  • Ducted split systems serving offices and banks
  • Modular water chillers for hotels and hospitals
  • Close-control air conditioning in server and equipment rooms
  • Like-for-like replacement of a failed ZR144KC in an existing R22 unit

Replacing a ZR144KC

Picture a bank’s rooftop unit that has tripped on overload and will not restart. First, the technician confirms the compressor has failed and finds the cause, such as phase loss, low voltage or a refrigerant leak. Next, they recover the gas, remove the old compressor and check the oil for signs of burnout. After that, they fit the new ZR144KC, replace the filter drier and pull a deep vacuum. Finally, they charge our HCFC-22 for legacy air conditioners by weight and check amps, pressures and superheat.

Check the Rotation

Scroll compressors only pump when they spin the right way. If the phase sequence is wrong, the ZR144KC will run noisily, draw low current and produce no cooling. Therefore, check rotation at start-up and fit a phase-monitoring relay to protect against phase loss and reversal.

Planning Ahead

The ZR144KC is built for R22, which is being phased out under the Montreal Protocol (see chlorodifluoromethane). For systems moving away from R22, Copeland offers the ZR144KCE version with POE oil for R407C. In that case, pair it with our R22-replacement HFC-407C. You can also compare our Danfoss alternative.

Safety and Handling

  • Use qualified installers. A trained HVAC technician and a licensed electrician should install and wire the compressor.
  • Match the power supply. Confirm that your supply is 380–415 V, three-phase, 50 Hz before connecting.
  • Isolate power before work. Always switch off and lock out the supply before touching terminals.
  • Size protection correctly. Select contactors, breakers and cables using the nameplate amps.
  • Keep it upright. Store and transport the compressor upright to keep oil in the sump.
  • Never run without refrigerant. Running a scroll compressor in a vacuum can damage it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between ZR144KC and ZR144KCE?

The ZR144KC is the R22 version and uses mineral oil. The ZR144KCE uses POE oil and suits HFC refrigerants such as R407C.

Can I use the ZR144KC with R410A?

No. R410A runs at much higher pressures than this compressor is designed for. Use a compressor rated for R410A instead.

Why is my new scroll compressor noisy and not cooling?

On three-phase models, the most likely cause is reverse rotation. Switch off immediately and swap two phase wires, then restart.

What does TFD mean in the model number?

It is the electrical code. The TFD version runs on 380–415 V, three-phase, 50 Hz, which suits Kenya’s commercial supply.
