Description

Loctite UK 8103 Adhesive for Cold Room and Sandwich Panels

Cold room walls, truck bodies and insulated building panels all rely on one thing: a strong, lasting bond between the metal skins and the foam core. If that bond fails, panels bow, delaminate and lose their insulating value. Loctite UK 8103 adhesive is made for exactly this job. At Wisdo Merchants, we supply it to panel manufacturers, cold room builders and fabricators across Nairobi and Kenya.

Loctite UK 8103 is the resin part of a two-component, solvent-free polyurethane adhesive made by Henkel. You mix it with the hardener, Loctite UK 5400, and the two react to form a hard but slightly elastic bond. As a result, it holds metal, wood, plastic and rigid foam firmly together in sandwich panels.

Features and Benefits of Loctite UK 8103 Adhesive

  • Built for sandwich panels. Henkel designed it mainly for producing sandwich elements for vehicles, containers and insulated buildings.
  • Bonds many materials. It joins pre-treated metals, plastics, wood and rigid foams such as polystyrene, polyurethane and rock wool.
  • Solvent-free. It won’t attack polystyrene foam cores, and it gives off no solvent fumes.
  • No shrinkage. The cured adhesive shows no measurable change in volume, so panels stay flat.
  • Cures at room temperature. It cures at temperatures from 15 °C upward, and you can speed it up with heat.

For panel makers, this means flat, strong panels that keep their insulation value. Meanwhile, cold room owners get walls and doors that last.

Applications of Loctite UK 8103 Adhesive and How to Use It

  • Cold room and chiller panels, bonding steel skins to polyurethane or polystyrene foam
  • Insulated doors for cold rooms and freezers
  • Refrigerated truck bodies and container panels
  • Insulated building panels for walls and roofs
  • Composite boards made from foam, wood and plastic layers

Bonding a Cold Room Panel

Picture a workshop laminating panels for a new cold room. First, the team makes sure the steel skins are clean, dry and properly pre-treated. Next, they weigh out Loctite UK 8103 and UK 5400 at a ratio of 5 to 1 and mix them thoroughly. After that, they spread the adhesive evenly over the skin and lay the foam core and second skin in place. Finally, they press the panel until the adhesive cures; a little squeeze-out along the edges shows there is enough adhesive in the joint.

Tips for a Strong Bond

Always mix in the exact ratio, because too much of either part weakens the bond. In addition, work above 15 °C and use the mixed adhesive within its working time. To clean tools, remove uncured adhesive with Loctite SF 8040; once cured, it can only be removed mechanically. For bonding rubber door seals on the finished cold room, use our rubber and plastic instant glue.

Safety and Handling

  • The hardener contains isocyanate. Avoid breathing vapour or mist, and work in a well-ventilated area.
  • Wear protective equipment. Use chemical-resistant gloves, safety glasses and protective clothing.
  • Read both Safety Data Sheets. Check the SDS for UK 8103 and UK 5400 before use.
  • Keep containers sealed. The hardener reacts with moisture in the air, so close containers immediately after use.
  • Store properly. Keep both components in a cool, dry place, away from frost and direct sunlight.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a separate hardener?

Yes. Loctite UK 8103 is the resin (Part A). It must be mixed with Loctite UK 5400 hardener (Part B) to cure.

What is the mixing ratio?

Mix 5 parts UK 8103 to 1 part UK 5400 by weight, or 3.7 to 1 by volume.

Will it damage polystyrene foam?

No. It is solvent-free, so it bonds polystyrene and other rigid foams without attacking them.

How long does it take to cure?

It cures at room temperature from 15 °C upward. Full strength develops over time, and heat or the UK 6100 accelerator speeds the process.
