Loctite 638 Retaining Compound for Bearings, Shafts and Pulleys

A bearing that spins in its housing, or a pulley that slips on its shaft, can wreck a machine fast. Worn seats, loose fits and constant vibration all cause this. Traditionally, the fix meant expensive machining or replacing the shaft or housing. Loctite 638 retaining compound offers a far quicker solution. At Wisdo Merchants, we supply it to mechanics, maintenance engineers and plant teams across Nairobi and Kenya.

Loctite 638 is a green, high-strength retaining compound made by Henkel. It is an anaerobic adhesive, so it stays liquid in the bottle and cures once it is confined between close-fitting metal parts. As a result, it fills the tiny gaps in cylindrical joints and bonds them solidly, making them stronger than a press fit alone.

Features and Benefits of Loctite 638 Retaining Compound

  • High strength. It delivers shear strength of up to about 31 N/mm² (4,500 psi) on steel, holding parts under heavy load and vibration.
  • Fills gaps up to 0.25 mm. It bonds slip-fit parts and restores slightly worn bearing seats.
  • Works on all metals. It cures on steel and on inactive metals such as stainless steel.
  • Oil tolerant. It cures even with minor traces of industrial oil on the parts.
  • High temperature resistance. It keeps working from –55 °C up to +180 °C.

For maintenance teams, this means fewer spinning bearings and slipping pulleys. Meanwhile, worn parts can often be saved instead of replaced.

Applications of Loctite 638 Retaining Compound and How to Use It

  • Bearings in housings and on shafts, including worn bearing seats
  • Pulleys and gears on shafts in fans, pumps and gearboxes
  • Bushings and sleeves in machinery
  • Pump impellers and couplings on motor shafts
  • Fan hubs on motor shafts in HVAC and refrigeration equipment

Fixing a Spinning Bearing

Picture a technician rebuilding a fan motor whose bearing has been spinning in the end cover. First, they clean the bearing outer ring and housing bore to remove oil and dirt. Next, they apply a thin, even coat of Loctite 638 around the bore. After that, they push the bearing into place with a slight twisting motion to spread the compound. Finally, they wipe off any excess and allow it to cure; it fixtures in about 4 minutes and reaches full strength in about 24 hours.

Removing Bonded Parts

Because Loctite 638 is high strength, bonded parts won’t pull apart cold. Instead, heat the assembly locally, then separate the parts while they are still hot.

Retaining or Threadlocking?

Loctite 638 is for smooth, cylindrical parts such as bearings and shafts. For threaded fasteners, use a threadlocker instead, such as our green high-strength threadlocker for permanent studs, or our blue medium-strength threadlocker for bolts you’ll remove later.

Safety and Handling

  • Avoid skin and eye contact. Wear gloves and safety glasses, and wash off any spills promptly.
  • Read the Safety Data Sheet. Follow Henkel’s handling and first-aid guidance.
  • Use on metal parts. Anaerobic adhesives are designed for metal and may harm some plastics.
  • Avoid oxygen systems. Do not use on oxygen-rich systems unless the manufacturer approves it.
  • Store properly. Keep the bottle closed, in a cool, dry place away from sunlight.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a retaining compound?

It is an adhesive that bonds smooth cylindrical parts, such as bearings, bushings and gears, onto shafts or into housings. It fills the gaps between the parts and stops them moving.

Can Loctite 638 fix a worn bearing seat?

Yes, if the gap is no more than about 0.25 mm. For larger wear, the part needs repair or machining.

How do I remove a bearing fixed with Loctite 638?

Heat the assembly locally, then remove the bearing while it is still hot.

Does it work on stainless steel?

Yes. It bonds all metals, including inactive surfaces such as stainless steel.
