A filter drier cartridge is the replaceable core inside a filter drier shell, fitted in the system’s liquid or suction line. It is made from a moulded block of drying materials such as molecular sieve and activated alumina. As refrigerant flows through, the block soaks up water, neutralises acid and filters out dirt. When it is saturated, you simply open the shell and fit a new cartridge, with no cutting or brazing needed.

Replacing a Cartridge on a Cold Room

Picture a technician servicing a cold room after replacing a failed expansion valve. First, they isolate the filter drier shell and recover the refrigerant from that section. Next, they unbolt the shell’s end cover, remove the old cartridge and fit the new one with a fresh gasket. After that, they close the shell and evacuate the system with our refrigeration vacuum pump. Finally, they recharge the system, for example with our freezer-grade HFC-404A, and check the sight glass for a clear, dry flow.

After a Compressor Burnout

A burnt-out compressor leaves acid and carbon throughout the system. Therefore, fit fresh cartridges, check the oil for acid after a few days of running, and change the cores again if needed. When topping up oil, use the grade the compressor maker specifies, such as our ISO VG 68 POE lubricant.

Safety and Handling

• Keep cartridges sealed until use. The drying material starts absorbing moisture from the air as soon as the packaging is opened.
• Fit quickly. Install the new core within minutes of opening it.
• Recover refrigerant first. Never open a filter shell under pressure.
• Replace the gasket. Always use a new cover gasket to avoid leaks.
• Wear gloves and safety glasses. Old cores may contain acidic oil after a burnout.
• Dispose of used cores responsibly. They may hold oil and contaminants.

What is the difference between a filter drier cartridge and a sealed filter drier?

A sealed filter drier is brazed in and replaced as one unit. A cartridge fits inside a reusable shell, so only the core is replaced.

How often should I change the cartridge?

Change it whenever the system is opened, after a burnout, or if a pressure drop across the filter or a cloudy sight glass shows it is saturated.

Will it fit my filter shell?

Cartridges are made to fit specific shells. The Danfoss 48-DC fits Danfoss DCR 0485 to 19217 shells and similar 4¾ in. shells, while the Castel 4495/C fits Castel 4411-series shells. If unsure, send us a photo of your shell before ordering.

Can I reuse an old cartridge?

No. Once saturated with moisture and acid, it can’t be restored. Always fit a new one.
