Aluminium Tape for Ducts, Insulation and Pipework
Leaky air conditioning ducts waste cool air before it ever reaches the room. Torn insulation on refrigerant pipes lets moisture in, causing drips, corrosion and wasted energy. Ordinary tape peels off in heat and humidity, so these problems soon return. Aluminium tape gives a seal that lasts. At Wisdo Merchants, we supply it to HVAC installers, refrigeration technicians, plumbers and contractors across Nairobi and Kenya.
Aluminium tape is a thin aluminium foil backing coated with a strong pressure-sensitive adhesive. You simply peel off the liner, press it down and rub it smooth. As a result, it forms a tight, moisture-proof seal that reflects heat and holds on metal, insulation and many other surfaces.
Features and Benefits of Aluminium Tape
- Airtight, moisture-proof seal. It seals duct joints and insulation seams against air and water vapour.
- Strong, lasting adhesion. The adhesive grips metal, foil-faced insulation, glass wool and many plastics.
- Handles heat and cold. It holds on hot pipes and cold ducts better than ordinary tape.
- Reflects heat. The shiny foil reflects radiant heat, helping insulation work better.
- Reinforced, tear-resistant backing. A woven scrim inside the foil makes the tape tougher and harder to tear than plain foil tape.
- Reinforced for strength. A woven mesh inside the foil makes the tape tougher and harder to tear than plain foil tape.
- Conforms to shapes. The soft foil moulds around bends, corners and uneven surfaces.
For installers, this means neater, longer-lasting ductwork and insulation. Meanwhile, building owners get efficient cooling with less energy wasted.

Applications of Aluminium Tape and How to Use It
- Sealing AC and ventilation duct joints
- Joining foil-faced insulation boards and blankets
- Wrapping and sealing pipe insulation seams on refrigerant and water lines
- Repairing torn insulation on chillers and cold rooms
- Sealing around vents, hoods and flues within the tape’s temperature range
Sealing a Duct Joint
Picture an HVAC installer joining two sections of ductwork in an office ceiling. First, they wipe the joint clean and dry, removing dust and oil. Next, they cut a length of aluminium tape and peel back the liner a little at a time. After that, they press the tape centrally over the joint, smoothing it from the middle outwards to push out air bubbles. Finally, they rub it down firmly with a squeegee or the back of a knife, so the adhesive makes full contact.
Seal Larger Gaps First
Tape works best over tight joints. For wider gaps around pipes and ducts, first fill them with our multi-purpose expanding foam, then seal the surface with aluminium tape for a clean, airtight finish.
Safety and Handling
- Watch the edges. Foil edges can be sharp, so handle the tape carefully.
- Apply to clean, dry surfaces. Dust, oil and moisture weaken the bond.
- Work at sensible temperatures. Very cold surfaces reduce initial grip, so warm them if possible.
- Don’t use it on live electrical parts. The foil conducts electricity.
- Store cool and dry. Keep rolls away from direct sunlight and heat.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is aluminium tape the same as duct tape?
No. Cloth duct tape dries out and peels in heat. Aluminium tape is designed for permanent, airtight sealing of ducts and insulation.
Can I use it outdoors?
Yes. The foil resists moisture and sunlight better than most tapes. Apply it to clean, dry surfaces for the best bond.
Will it stick to pipe insulation?
Yes. It sticks well to foil-faced and many other insulation materials, making it ideal for sealing seams.
Can I paint over it?
Paint may not bond well to the smooth foil. If you need to paint, lightly scuff the surface and use a suitable primer.
Do you deliver outside Nairobi?
