Refrigerant Leak Detector for Fast AC and Fridge Repairs

Topping up gas without finding the leak is like filling a bucket with a hole in it. The client pays for refrigerant, the system loses it again, and soon you’re back on site. A refrigerant leak detector breaks this cycle by pointing you straight to the leak. At Wisdo Merchants, we supply leak detectors to AC technicians, refrigeration engineers and service workshops across Nairobi and Kenya.

An electronic leak detector draws air through its probe tip and passes it over a sensitive gas sensor. When refrigerant reaches the sensor, the detector beeps faster and lights up, getting louder as you move closer to the leak. As a result, you can find tiny leaks in coils, joints and valves that soap bubbles would miss. Read more about leak detection methods.

Features and Benefits of the Refrigerant Leak Detector

  • Finds small leaks fast. The sensor picks up traces of refrigerant that are invisible to the eye.
  • Audible and visual alarm. Beeps and lights speed up as you get closer, so you can pinpoint the exact spot.
  • Flexible probe. A long, bendable probe reaches behind coils and into tight spaces.
  • Adjustable sensitivity. Lower settings help you home in on a leak once the general area is found.
  • Portable and battery-powered. It goes anywhere, from rooftops to cold rooms.

For technicians, this means faster repairs and fewer repeat visits. Meanwhile, clients stop paying for gas that keeps escaping.

Applications of the Refrigerant Leak Detector and How to Use It

  • Split ACs that keep losing gas
  • Fridges and freezers with slow leaks
  • Cold rooms and display chillers
  • Checking new installations before handover
  • Confirming repairs after brazing or re-flaring joints

Tracing a Leak on a Split Unit

Picture a technician called to a split AC that needed gas only two months ago. First, they confirm low pressures with our professional dual gauge set. Next, they switch on the leak detector in fresh air so it calibrates, then move the probe slowly along each joint, coil and valve, about 2 to 3 cm per second. After that, when the alarm speeds up, they lower the sensitivity and narrow down the exact spot. Finally, they confirm it with a drop of soapy water, repair the leak, then evacuate the system with our refrigeration vacuum pump before recharging.

Pair It with UV Dye

For very slow or intermittent leaks, combine the detector with our UV-dye leak sealer. The dye glows at the leak point under a UV lamp, while the detector confirms where gas is escaping.

Safety and Handling

  • Check the refrigerant list. Make sure the detector is rated for the gas you’re testing. Flammable gases such as our isobutane for modern fridges need a detector designed for them.
  • Turn it on in clean air. Starting the detector near a leak can give false readings.
  • Keep the tip clean. Dirt, oil and moisture on the probe tip reduce sensitivity.
  • Avoid draughts. Wind and fans blow gas away; switch off fans while searching.
  • Replace batteries in time. Low batteries cause weak or false alarms.
  • Store it dry. Keep the detector in its case away from dust and moisture.

Frequently Asked Questions

What refrigerants can it detect?

This halogen detector finds CFC, HCFC and HFC refrigerants, including R134a, R22, R410A and R404A. It does not detect hydrocarbon gases such as R600a or R290.

Why does my detector keep beeping in one area?

There may be a leak nearby, or gas from a large leak may have spread through the area. Ventilate the space, reset the detector in fresh air and search again more slowly.

Is it better than soap bubbles?

It finds much smaller leaks and searches large areas faster. Soap bubbles are still useful to confirm the exact spot.

Can it find leaks inside walls?

It can only sense gas that reaches the probe. For hidden pipes, check at joints, access points and where pipes enter walls.
