Fire Rated PU Foam for Sealing Gaps Safely
Gaps around door frames, pipes and cables let in draughts, dust and insects. However, in a fire, those same gaps can also let smoke and flames spread from room to room. Ordinary expanding foam fills the gap, but it can burn easily. Fire rated PU foam seals the gap and is formulated to resist flame spread. At Wisdo Merchants, we supply it to contractors, fitters, plumbers and maintenance teams across Nairobi and Kenya.
Fire rated PU foam is a one-component polyurethane foam with flame-retardant additives. It comes out of the can as a sticky paste, then expands and cures by reacting with moisture in the air. As a result, it fills irregular gaps completely, bonds to most building materials and insulates against heat and sound.
Features and Benefits of Fire Rated PU Foam
- Flame-retardant formula. It is designed to resist flame spread better than standard expanding foam.
- Expands to fill gaps. It swells to fill irregular cavities, cracks and openings completely.
- Strong adhesion. It bonds to concrete, brick, wood, metal, plaster and most plastics.
- Insulates heat and sound. The cured foam reduces draughts, heat loss and noise.
- Easy to trim. Once cured, it can be cut flush, then sanded, plastered or painted.
For contractors, this means a cleaner, safer finish on every job. Meanwhile, building owners get better insulation and an extra layer of fire protection.

Applications of Fire Rated PU Foam and How to Use It
- Door and window frames, filling the gap between frame and wall
- Pipe and cable penetrations through walls and ceilings
- Gaps around cold room panels and service openings
- Air-conditioning pipe holes through external walls
- General gap filling in buildings where improved fire performance is wanted
Sealing a Pipe Penetration
Picture an installer finishing the hole where a split AC’s pipes pass through a wall. First, they clean dust from the hole and lightly mist the surfaces with water, which helps the foam cure. Next, they shake the can well for about 30 seconds and screw it onto a PU foam gun. After that, they fill the gap about halfway, because the foam expands as it cures. Finally, they let it cure fully, trim off any excess with a knife and seal or paint the surface.
Know What Fire Rated Means
Fire rated foam slows the spread of fire, but it is not fireproof. For fire-resistant walls and floors that must meet a certified firestop rating, use only a tested and approved system, as required by your local building regulations. Always check the fire rating printed on the can before choosing it for a job. For everyday gap filling where fire resistance isn’t needed, choose our multi-purpose expanding foam. For bonding cold room panels themselves, use our sandwich panel adhesive set.
Safety and Handling
- Wear gloves and safety glasses. Uncured foam sticks firmly to skin and is hard to remove.
- Ventilate the area. Avoid breathing the vapour while applying and curing.
- Keep away from flames and heat. The can is pressurised and contains flammable propellant.
- Store cans upright and cool. Keep them below 50 °C and out of direct sunlight.
- Protect cured foam from sunlight. UV light degrades exposed foam, so cover it with paint, plaster or sealant.
- Never puncture or burn the can, even when empty.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between fire rated and normal PU foam?
Fire rated foam contains flame-retardant additives, so it resists flame spread better. Normal foam fills gaps but can burn more easily.
Is fire rated foam fireproof?
No. It slows fire spread, but it is not fireproof. For certified fire-resistant walls and floors, use an approved firestop system.
How long does it take to cure?
It is usually touch-dry in minutes and can be cut after a few hours, depending on temperature, humidity and gap size. Follow the times printed on the can.
Can I paint over it?
Yes. Once cured and trimmed, it can be painted or plastered, which also protects it from sunlight.
