R404A Refrigerant Gas – Powerful Cooling for Cold Rooms and Freezers
Frozen stock spoils fast when a cold room loses temperature. That is why food processors, supermarkets and hotels rely on R404A refrigerant gas to keep products frozen and safe. At Wisdo Merchants, we supply R404A to refrigeration technicians and maintenance teams across Nairobi and Kenya.
R404A is an HFC blend (a mixture of hydrofluorocarbon gases) designed for low- and medium-temperature refrigeration. It replaced older ozone-damaging gases such as R502 and R22 in commercial freezing systems. As a result, it became the workhorse gas for cold storage across the world.
Features and Benefits of R404A Refrigerant Gas
R404A gives commercial refrigeration systems strong, steady performance. Here is what it offers:
- Excellent low-temperature cooling. It boils at about –46 °C, so it reaches deep freezing temperatures easily.
- Zero ozone depletion. The blend contains no chlorine and has an Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) of zero.
- A1 safety rating. ASHRAE classifies it as A1, meaning low toxicity and no flame spread under normal conditions.
- Near-azeotropic blend. Its three components behave almost like a single gas. In practice, this means very little temperature glide (the change in boiling temperature during evaporation).
- Proven reliability. Furthermore, countless cold rooms, display freezers and ice machines already run on it, so spare parts and expertise are easy to find.
For your business, this means dependable cold chains and fewer stock losses. Similarly, technicians benefit from a gas they already know well.

Applications and How to Use R404A refrigerant gas
R404A suits a wide range of commercial cooling equipment, including:
- Cold rooms and walk-in freezers in hotels, abattoirs and food processing plants
- Supermarket display freezers and chest freezers
- Ice-making machines and ice cream cabinets
- Blast freezers for fish, meat and poultry
- Transport refrigeration on reefer trucks and containers
Servicing a Cold Room
Consider a hotel cold room that struggles to hold –18 °C. First, the technician checks the pressures and finds the leak. Next, they repair it and pull a deep vacuum to remove moisture. After that, they charge R404A as a liquid, because charging a blend as vapour changes its composition. Finally, they monitor superheat and subcooling until the system runs at its design temperature.
Always charge by weight against the equipment nameplate. Additionally, never mix R404A with other refrigerants in the same system.
Planning Ahead
R404A has a high Global Warming Potential. Consequently, many countries are phasing down its use under the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol. Existing systems can keep running on it, but owners planning new installations should ask about lower-GWP alternatives such as R448A or R449A.
Safety and Handling
R404A is safe when handled correctly. Still, it is a high-pressure gas, so follow these rules:
- Protect your eyes and hands. Wear safety goggles and insulated gloves. Liquid refrigerant causes frostbite on contact.
- Ventilate the work area. The vapour is heavier than air and can displace oxygen in cold rooms, pits and basements.
- Keep away from open flames. High heat breaks the gas down into toxic and corrosive products.
- Store cylinders safely. Keep them upright in a cool, shaded area below 50 °C, away from direct sunlight.
- Recover, don’t vent. Use proper recovery equipment for used gas.
- Use trained technicians. Only qualified refrigeration personnel should charge or service systems.
Ask our sales team for the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for complete handling guidance.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I top up R404A after a leak?
Yes, but only after fixing the leak. Because R404A is a near-azeotropic blend, topping up a small leak usually works well. However, after a large leak, many technicians recover the remaining gas and recharge the system fully.
Why must R404A be charged as a liquid?
It is a blend of three gases. If you charge it as vapour, the lighter components enter first and the mix changes. Liquid charging keeps the correct composition.
Can I use R404A in an R22 system?
Not directly. The system needs a retrofit, including a change to POE oil and often a new expansion valve. Consult a qualified technician first.
Which oil works with R404A?
Use POE (polyolester) oil. Mineral and alkylbenzene oils do not mix properly with HFC gases.
