R507 Refrigerant Gas for Cold Rooms and Commercial Freezers
When a cold room fails, meat, fish and dairy stock can be lost within hours. That is why many food processors, supermarkets and cold stores choose R507 refrigerant gas for dependable low-temperature cooling. At Wisdo Merchants, we supply R507 to refrigeration technicians and maintenance teams across Nairobi and Kenya.
R507 (also written R507A) is an HFC blend of two gases, R125 and R143a, in equal parts. Unlike most blends, however, it is a true azeotrope, which means it behaves exactly like a single gas. As a result, it evaporates and condenses at one steady temperature, making charging and servicing simple.
Features and Benefits of R507 Refrigerant Gas
- True azeotropic blend. Its two components never separate, so it has zero temperature glide (no change in boiling temperature during evaporation).
- Strong low-temperature performance. It boils at about –47 °C, so it reaches deep freezing temperatures easily.
- Easy top-ups. Because the blend does not fractionate, a leak does not change its composition.
- Zero ozone depletion. It contains no chlorine and has an Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) of zero.
- A1 safety rating. It carries an A1 classification on the ASHRAE list of refrigerants, meaning low toxicity and no flame spread under normal conditions.
For your business, this means steady freezing temperatures and fewer stock losses. Likewise, technicians enjoy faster, more predictable servicing.

Applications of R507 Refrigerant Gas and How to Use It
- Cold rooms and walk-in freezers in hotels, abattoirs and food factories
- Supermarket display freezers and frozen food cabinets
- Ice-making machines and ice cream freezers
- Blast freezers for fish, meat and poultry processing
- Transport refrigeration on reefer trucks and containers
Servicing a Supermarket Freezer
Picture a supermarket freezer cabinet that can no longer hold –20 °C. First, the technician checks the system pressures and finds the leak. Next, they repair it and pull a deep vacuum to remove moisture. After that, they charge R507 by weight, following the equipment nameplate. Finally, they confirm superheat and subcooling to make sure the cabinet reaches its design temperature.
Never mix R507 with other refrigerants in the same system. For medium-temperature fridges and car AC, use our HFC-134a instead.
R507 or R404A?
Both gases serve the same low-temperature jobs and use POE oil. However, R507 has zero glide, while our freezer-grade HFC-404A has a very small one. In many cases, a technician can switch an R404A system to R507 with minimal changes. Even so, always follow the equipment manufacturer’s guidance.
Planning Ahead
R507 has a high Global Warming Potential. Consequently, many countries are phasing down its use under the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol. Existing systems can keep running on it, while new installations increasingly use lower-GWP gases such as R448A or R449A.
Safety and Handling
- Protect your eyes and hands. Wear safety goggles and insulated gloves. Liquid refrigerant causes frostbite on contact.
- Ventilate the work area. The vapour is heavier than air and can displace oxygen inside cold rooms and pits.
- Keep away from open flames. High heat breaks the gas down into toxic and corrosive products.
- Store cylinders safely. Keep them upright in a cool, shaded area below 50 °C, away from direct sunlight.
- Recover, don’t vent. Use proper recovery equipment for used gas.
- Use trained technicians. Only qualified refrigeration personnel should charge or service systems.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I top up R507 after a leak?
Yes. Because R507 is azeotropic, its composition stays the same after a leak. Therefore, you can top up safely once the leak is repaired.
Can R507 replace R404A in my cold room?
Often, yes. Both use POE oil and work at similar pressures. However, a qualified technician should check the expansion valve and system settings first.
Can I use R507 in an R22 system?
Not directly. The system needs a retrofit, including a change to POE oil and often a new expansion valve.
Which oil works with R507?
Use POE (polyolester) oil. Mineral and alkylbenzene oils do not mix properly with HFC gases.
